The Cranberries é uma banda irlandesa de rock alternativo que ganhou notoriedade durante a década de 1990. Em 2003, interrompeu as atividades, retornando em 2009 para uma série de shows. A banda vendeu mais de 14.5 milhões de álbuns somente nos Estados Unidos.
A banda é composta por Dolores Mary Eileen O’Riordan Burton (voz, teclados e segunda guitarra), Michael Gerard Hogan (baixo), Noel Anthony Hogan (guitarra) e Fergal Patrick Lawler (bateria).
Noel e Mike Hogan, dois irmãos de Limerick, idealizaram a banda em 1989 e a formaram com o baterista Fergal Lawler em 1990. O nome original era The Cranberry Saw Us, o saw us fazendo um trocadilho com sauce, molho em inglês (vale lembrar que cranberry, ou mirtilo em português, é fruta típica da ilha irlandesa). Dolores O’Riordan fez o teste e ganhou o papel de vocalista principal, compondo a letra de Linger. Sua voz é um elemento importante da sonoridade da banda. De fato, o diferencial das canções do grupo está justamente na voz de Dolores, que é quase mais um instrumento do grupo.
Ao longo de treze anos de carreira, a banda alcançou sucesso mundial através de cinco álbums:
- “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?” (1993), cujos singles foram “Dreams” (1992/1994) e “Linger” (1993);
- “No Need To Argue” (1994), cujos singles foram “Zombie” (1994), “Ode To My Family” (1994), “I Can’t Be With You” (1995) e “Ridiculous Thoughts” (1995);
- “To The Faithful Departed” (1996), com os singles “Salvation” (1996), “Free To Decide” (1996), “When You’re Gone” (1996) e “Hollywood” (1997);
- “Bury The Hatchet” (1999), com os singles “Promises” (1999), “Animal Instinct” (1999), “Just My Imagination” (1999) e “You And Me” (2000); e
- “Wake Up And Smell The Coffee” (2001), cujos singles foram “Analyse” (2001), “Time Is Ticking Out” (2002) e “This Is The Day” (2002).
Ainda em 2003 foram reunidos todos os singles em uma coletânea, que apresentava duas canções inéditas: “New New York”, sobre os atentados terroristas aos Estados Unidos e “Stars”, que virou singlee intitulava a coletânea.
